Why I Walk – Afton Edwards

Why_I_Walk_Grandma

My name is Afton Edwards and I Walk to End Alzheimer’s in memory of my grandmother, Lois Amidon, who passed away on February 7th, 2015. My grandmother battled Alzheimer’s Disease for about 7 years.

This year will be my 11th year participating in Richmond Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

My grandmother and I always enjoyed spending time with each other. When I was a young child, we would go to the Science Museum and even Kings Dominion to ride the roller coasters.

When my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, we still would enjoy our times together. When she moved to an assisted living facility about 6 years ago, I would go see her almost every single day and help my mom take care of her.

On Sundays, we would go to church together, and then bring my grandmother to my house to have lunch and we would usually play cards.

I truly enjoyed and cherish every memory that was shared with my grandmother. Now that she is gone, I miss her greatly, but I know she is in a better place.

I hope that more and more people consider joining the cause and participate in the Walk or donating money. Together, we can #ENDALZ.
